SmarTrunk Systems, Inc., was founded in 1979 as Selectone Corporation, a privately held California corporation. Since its inception, the company was a leading manufacturer of tone signaling and voice encryption equipment for the mobile communications industry. The company's original Selectone products are found in virtually every type of business, industrial, and public safety communication system throughout the world. In 1992, the company introduced the original SmarTrunk system as a low cost trunking protocol for radiotelephone systems in developing countries. In 1994, a second-generation system was introduced, SmarTrunk II, with many more features and a faster, more secure digital signaling protocol. Since then, SmarTrunk II has become an industry standard radio trunking protocol at VHF and UHF frequencies in more than eighty countries and is offered on an OEM basis by most leading manufacturers of wireless communications equipment.
Recognizing the growing importance of the SmarTrunk II product line, the company's corporate name was changed to SmarTrunk Systems, Inc., in early 1996. In June 2000, the company's original Selectone product line was sold to Communications Specialists, Inc., of Orange, California. In July, 2001, after nearly 30 years in the land mobile business, SmarTrunk's founder and CEO elected to retire by arranging the sale of the company to Ranger Communications, Inc. SmarTrunk Systems, Inc., is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Ranger Communications, Inc., of National City (San Diego), California.
Ranger's three overseas factories, coupled with their 30+ years of experience in the communications business, will assure SmarTrunk's future as the leading supplier of VHF and UHF radio trunking and wireless local loop systems. And with the recent introduction of the ST-510 SmarTrunk II Network Switch, the popular SmarTrunk II protocol could be expanded for wide area roaming coverage from up to 32 repeater sites.
After many inconsitent upgrades (as ST-960 AVL fleet management), in January, 2007, SmarTrunk Systems decided to develop a new product, the new SmarTrunk Xpress Trunking Protocol, which left behind the older SmarTrunk II products line. Under new management, after Joe Banos departure, many possitive changes have been performed, and all developments and designs were performed successfully in SmarTrunk South America Engineering Office (SAO).
The SmarTrunk Xpress product line is compatible with ST-510 Wide Area Network Switches family, and Xpress logic boards are backwards compatible with older protocol systems.
SmarTrunk Systems, Inc. is located in National City, near San Diego, CA. Manufacturing and engineering facilities are maintained in Taiwan, Shanghai and Malaysia. SmarTrunk products and systems are marketed by most leading manufacturers of wireless communications equipment and by communication system integrators in key geographic regions throughout the world.
