About SmarTrunk

Dependable Communications Essential
in the Caribbean
Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, tropical forest and salty air, you'll find the two lush, peaceful islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. Amidst the beauty is the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the disaster management organization, whose ability to communicate uninterrupted during natural disasters like hurricanes, volcanoes and floods is vital to the islands' inhabitants. In the past three
decades, St. Kitts and Nevis have experienced heavy disaster damage totaling $313 million.

In creating a feature-rich trunked radio system, NEMA worked with Bernard Browne, managing director of Chris-comm Ltd., to design a system that integrates SmarTrunk's ST-853 Controller, ST-865M5 and ST-865M5A logic boards and the ST-510 network switch with dispatch console and call manager options.

"Call Manager is a queuing option which is activated if all repeaters are busy. The Call Manager receives the initial call and puts it into queue. When the repeater or channel becomes free, the ST-510 then notifies the caller to call again now that the channel is available," said J.R. Estanol, SmarTrunk sales engineer. "The SmarTrunk solution is very cost-effective for this type of facility," said Browne.

NEMA and Browne designed a 10-channel system between the three sites (two at St. Kitts and one at Nevis). The dealer chose (40) Motorola Pro Series 7150 portables and (10) Motorola Pro 5100 mobiles, for a total of (50) radios, which then incorporate the SmarTrunk logic boards to add the trunking capabilities for this first stage of the system.

"There was no prior communications system in place, just a single repeater," said Browne. "The SmarTrunk ST-510 switch is scheduled to be installed at the end of October, after the repeater systems, antennas and all other infrastructure is in place," Browne added.

In next month's issue of SmarTalk, we'll discuss the performance of the finished system, as well as feature an interview with St. Kitts' communications manager.

New Products
SmarTrunk Systems, Inc. and Vertex Standard
reach Agreement on ST-865VTP50A Logic Board

Vertex Standard and SmarTrunk Systems, Inc. have reached an agreement for SmarTrunk to manufacture, supply and service the ST-865VTP50A logic board for the following Vertex Radios: VX-110 (non-USA only), VX-150 (non-USA only), VX-210, VX-210A, VX-400, VX-600, VX-800, VX-900 and the VX-4000 mobile.
Previously, SmarTrunk was providing the microprocessors with firmware to Vertex who then assembled the boards and installed them into the trunked radios.

"SmarTrunk will now fulfill production of the logic boards, handle customer service inquiries and even create new versions of the board, with enhanced trunking features," said Tony Huber, SmarTrunk applications engineer. SmarTrunk has also expanded customer service support for the product to handle technical support issues.

"We have a solid relationship with SmarTrunk and we're pleased that they have agreed to manufacture the logic boards for us, for a variety of Vertex radios. SmarTrunk's board offers subscribers enhanced trunking features not available in conventional radios, giving us yet another competitive edge over other radio manufacturers," said Scott Henderson, Vertex Standard executive vice president.

When installed, the ST-865VTP50A logic board offers the OmniTM feature set, including such benefits as Channel Banks (allows subscribers to access different sites which use different frequencies), Multiple PTT (Push-to-talk) Groups (allows subscribers to call different groups simply by pressing the PTT button), Multiple Receiver Groups (enables subscribers to receive both individual calls and calls placed to several different groups), SmartScan (provides faster channel access in a busy system) and many more features.

The ST-865VTP50A logic board also enables radio operators to utilize expanded SmarTrunk II features such as Store and Forward Dialing, 10-Number Memory Speed Dial (user programmable), Last Number Redial, Automatic Mobile Acknowledge eliminates wasted air-time, Different Ringing Tones to distinguish the type of call, Clear Channel Alerting tells the subscriber when a channel is available, Priority Override Calls, Conventional Operation, Two Trunking Modes: Radiotelephone and Dispatch Operation and Five-digit Security Code for system operation programming.

COMING SOON... A new Vertex logic board with Caller ID and scrambler is coming soon. Contact SmarTrunk if you are interested in being a Beta tester.

Smart Talent
Dalia Castro was recently promoted from Sales Administrator to Assistant Sales Manager at SmarTrunk. Castro has worked with SmarTrunk for over three years and has been instrumental in the company's efforts to offer excellent bi-lingual customer and sales support to its customers.

"Dalia has excelled in each of the
positions she has held at SmarTrunk and its parent company, Ranger Communications. Her most important quality is the individual attention she gives customers, large or small, and impeccable, prompt follow-up," said Joe Banos, President.

"With my new position, I will continue to enjoy a variety of responsibilities," said Castro. "What sets SmarTrunk apart from other companies is our responsive customer service and I'm committed to working hard to ensure that we continue to give our customers the very best service possible."

Castro began her career at Ranger Communications in September 2000, working with Latin American customers. She then transferred to the accounting department where she assisted Spanish-speaking customers with technical questions, customer service and accounting issues. At that time, she began helping SmarTrunk with its Latin American market. At the beginning of 2003, she began working full-time with SmarTrunk.

Prior to joining Ranger Communications/SmarTrunk, Castro worked for four years at Logistech, Inc., a logistics software company and at Hallmark Circuits, a manufacturer of PC boards, so she's well-versed in handling technical customers.

Tech Tips by Tony Huber
Tony Huber has been applications engineer for SmarTrunk for the past year. An industry veteran, Huber first worked with Joe Banos, SmarTrunk president, at Wilson Electronics and again at Celltronics/RF Industries. After a 7-year employment with Qualcomm/Ericsson, Tony was persuaded to join SmarTrunk. Huber has an Associates' Degree in Electronics Technology from Bismarck State College, North Dakota.

Q. How does the Priority function work in the ST-853 software and how do I use it?

A.
In the Edit Profile window of the ST-853 software, a user's priority can be set from 0 to 99. So, if all channels of the system are busy, and a user with a higher profile and a higher level of RF at the site receiver attempts to obtain a channel, the user with the higher priority may acquire that channel. The key word here is "may" not "will". There is no guarantee that the higher profile will always win a channel.

SmarTrunk recommends that this function be used with great caution. A few users with a higher profile than others will not create any negative results; however trouble arises when too many profiles are created with various levels of priorities. A symptom known as cross talk may happen often as radios are competing for channels. Therefore, a profile with a high priority should only be given to a very few users that will encounter very urgent situations. If your present system is not capable of providing a high enough quality of service for your present subscriber base, we recommend expanding your system or use the ST-510 with the Call Manager option which is the perfect way for emergency and priority management.

COMING SOON... The latest version of the VT60F logic board, with added features like Caller ID and scrambler capability for added security. Available in Oct!
