Development of a logic board for the new Motorola Commercial Series radios now completed.

SmarTrunk Systems announces the completion of the ST-865M7 “3G-ready” logic board for the new Motorola Commercial Series product line. Boards should be available in quantities beginning in early 2005. Compatibility is projected with the following product families:

Central and South America: EM-400 mobiles and EP450 portables
Europe, Middle East, and Africa: CM-160 mobiles and CP140/160/180 portables
Asia: GM-3688 mobile and GP-3688 portables
United States: CM-300 and PM400 mobile and PR400 portables

ST-865M7

Enhanced ST-865M5/M5A Logic Board for Motorola PRO series is now better than ever!

The ST-865M5/M5A logic board for the Motorola PRO series of mobile and portable radios has been upgraded to work even better and offer more features. SmarTrunk Systems has been working closely with the manufacturer in resolving some reported radio firmware compatibility issues, while at the same time expanding features.

The ST-865M5/M5A as well as the new ST-865M7 boards now offers full 3G features and optional speech inversion scramblers (click here for a full explanation of each of the 3G features). Though the complete 3G-feature set requires use of an ST-510 switch, some of these new features can also work on new or existing simple “controller only” systems (ST-853 controller upgrade required).

New features are dynamic radio Caller ID display, “store, scroll and call back” Caller ID stack of the last 10 calls received, scrollable alphanumeric (plain language) “ID tags” and speed dial alphanumeric tags. The 16 programmable ID tags give the radio user the ability to select (using a radio accessory button), display and make “one-push” PTT calls to as many as 16 pre-programmed groups or individuals. Alphanumeric identification can also be programmed for speed dial numbers on keypad radios.

Both boards now offer all the features above, PLUS the now standard OmniTM feature set consisting of:

  • Channel Banks (allows subscribers to access different sites with different frequencies or to program conventional channels alongside the SmarTrunk channels for uses such as talk around or to access other conventional radios systems).
  • Multiple PTT Groups (allows subscribers to call different groups using the PTT button).
  • Multiple Receiver Groups (enables subscribers to receive both individual calls and calls placed to other designated groups),
  • SmartScan (provides faster channel access in a busy system) and many more features.

“Plugging in a SmarTrunk logic board into your radio and connecting an ST-853 controller to each repeater in a system is the start of a basic SmarTrunk radio system,” said Joe Baños, president of SmarTrunk Systems. “A SmarTrunk operator can later add the ST-510 or ST-510LT switch and create a single or multi site network with a suite of
feature-rich options at a practical cost,” added Baños. Need more information? Contact SmarTrunk at salesinfo@smartrunk.com or

SmarTrunk Stays One Step Ahead by Refining
its Interoperability Option.

The ability to have a dependable radio network capable of routing certain communications to other radio systems is important during emergencies as well as advantageous in day-to-day operations. Though the SmarTrunk Systems’ ST-510 presently offers the ability to interface with other radio networks, this feature is being refined by incorporating DSP (Digital Signal Processing) techniques. This option makes it possible for users within a SmarTrunk radio system, to selectively route calls to one or several different “bridge” radios operating on other frequencies or protocols, enabling public safety, utilities and other end-users to access other radio networks when necessary.

Billing Software for SmarTrunk Radio Systems

A third-party provider has informed us that they have created billing software which is compatible with even the simplest form of SmarTrunk systems (single site, controllers only). The company is Computer Resources, Inc located in Peltham, AL (www.crinc.com). We now have a PowerPoint presentation, which describes their product and can be downloaded from our web site. A CD can also be sent to you if more convenient. Please contact us if you would like to receive this CD.

Other 3G Logic Boards

Though in this issue we have showcased the new logic boards for Motorola products, we have 3G-compatible versions available for Vertex, Icom and Kenwood radios. These boards have the same features as described for the new Motorola boards and can also be obtained with or without scrambler (except for Kenwood). Please contact us for our 4-page brochure and compatibility chart. This brochure concisely explains the many advantages and features of a SmarTrunk based system.

Advertise Your Name

As a result of suggestions from our customers, logic boards for Motorola Pro series or the Commercial Series radios (ST-865M5/M5A, ST-865M6 or ST-865M7) can be programmed so a custom message can be displayed upon your customer turning on his radio. This of course is only available on radios equipped with display. The Installation & Programming manual for M5/M6 explains in detail how to utilize the side buttons to initiate individual calls from a non keypad radio, and it (manual) also provides detailed information (parameter & application) for the channel selector.

New “3 Levels of SmarTrunk”
PowerPoint presentation now available on CD

Do you ever wonder what a basic SmarTrunk radio system looks like? Or what capabilities a SmarTrunk system can grow to have? Are you on a limited budget and need to upgrade your conventional radio system to trunking in steps? A SmarTrunk system can be built up in modules, so you can buy as simple or complex of a system as you need. The system can then grow with you, as your needs change for more advanced services and calling features. Contact Taunya Specht at t_specht@smartrunk.com to get your free CD which details in PowerPoint the three system options or price points of a SmarTrunk system. Remember, one of the advantages of purchasing a SmarTrunk System is that you can add as little or as much capability and features as your budget permits.
